Related pathways, different molecules
Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. These distinctions appear in the current Zepbound and Wegovy prescribing information.[source][source]
A mechanism explains part of how a medicine works; it does not by itself establish the size of a clinical benefit, an individual response or which product should be prescribed. Those questions require clinical evidence and assessment.
A molecule can appear under different product names
This publication primarily compares weight-management access to Zepbound and Wegovy alongside clearly labeled compounded offers. Other brands using the same molecules may have different approved indications, doses or product formats.
Do not use an ingredient name to assume every branded presentation has the same approved uses. Read the exact product label and ask the clinician which indication applies.[source][source]
Current products extend beyond the familiar injection
Wegovy’s current label includes tablets and multiple injection presentations, including 7.2 mg Wegovy HD. Zepbound includes several injectable presentations, such as single-dose vials and single-patient-use KwikPen.[source][source]
A daily tablet and a weekly injection introduce different practical routines. The label’s administration instructions and the clinician’s judgment matter more than a generic preference for pills or pens.
The head-to-head result has a specific scope
SURMOUNT-5 directly compared selected weekly injected regimens in adults without diabetes. It did not compare every formulation or determine the best medication for every health outcome.[source]
Approved indications beyond weight reduction also differ. A clinician may need to consider a particular health condition rather than optimize a single weight-loss percentage.
Preserve the product details when comparing care
Ask for the molecule, brand or compounded status, formulation and selected dose in a quote. Then compare the care and cost surrounding that actual prescription. A provider shortlist that loses those details risks comparing different treatments as if they were identical.
